In honor of the Academy Awards, I give you an incomplete list of really great movies:
Sound of Music. Juno. Big Fish. Sliding Doors. Dead Poets Society. Reality Bites. Good Will Hunting. Braveheart. Babe. Fantastic Mr. Fox. In Her Shoes. Life Is Beautiful. American Beauty.* Beautiful Girls.*
“The most influential and exciting restaurant would have to be Next. Dave has to re tool every season with a new concept and educate himself on a different type of cuisine, challenging himself to the max!!" —Danny Bowien, Mission Chinese Food, San Francisco and NYC”—
Preschool. We walked in Hazel’s application for preschool this week. And on March 15, we find out if she got in (lottery based admissions) - I am hoping so very hard that my girl gets picked. This waiting is killing me! #patiencemom
I’ve gotta tell you (as ridiculous as this may be), I have had a really great time with this whole preschool process. It has been incredible, actually. I got to tour different schools and see different ways in which children are engaged. I saw animated teachers and colorful walls and rows of books that Hazel has never laid eyes on!
The best part….I saw a lot of happy children.
I always always loved school and it is neat being back here, this time with my daughter.
DWR Did anyone else read the DWR catalog this month? It was fantastic! There were little bios/anecdotes about the designers and history of the iconic pieces they sell. Really well done DWR.
Somewhat related: Have you seen the “Champagne Chair" challenge? Outstanding.
Heartbreak I have some people in my life with broken hearts right now. Heartbreak is such a sad thing. (tight squeeze). This heaviness brings to mind a favorite quote: ”Let me step out of my own heart" -Mary Zimmerman, Metamorphoses
Dinner Husband & I decided to take our family of 4 out to dinner tonight. Provided Fee isn’t zonked when we get home, we are going to head up Athenian Room for a Tuesday night outing….just because. I am game for a chicken kabob salad and I am sure Hazel will eat the hell out of some Feta. Sounds fun, no?
Community I have really appreciated the support I have gotten from my professional community during this transition back to work. A tip: If you have an office buddy returning from leave - check in on her those first few weeks back. The pings and emails and lunch invites and quick stops by my desk have been exceptionally helpful….I will long appreciate those who took the time to ask how I was doing (or hug me in the salad bar line)
(*TNDN = Thursday Night Dinner Night. Or Thursday Night Date Night. See what I did with the D there? Clever one, I am. **.)
(**ok, ok, fine. TNDN is a blatant rip off of TNPN - Tuesday Night Party Night - which was our alternate name for Manhattan Tuesdays at the steakhouse where I worked in college. Manhattan Tuesdays? It is as goodbadgood bad of an idea as it sounds. But I digress…)
You guys are just the greatest…. Have I told you that lately?
I was completely overwhelmed by your responses to yesterday’s hand-me-up giveaway. I got some of the sweetest emails about the babies (and babies-to-be) in your lives.
I received too many responses to reply individually (Now that I am back at work, I don’t quite have the free time I used to), but I just wanted to make sure I took a moment to thank you for sharing your lives/stories with me.
I love this little community we have here with all of my heart.
I will reach out to the three package recipients this evening to confirm (so if you haven’t heard from me yet - that doesn’t mean you aren’t one of the “winners!”) And if there are any other parents out there with baby clothes they would like to “pay forward”….shoot me a note/message - I have some families that could use a hand! xo, em
This weekend, I stress cleaned (it seemed more productive than stress eating the entire pan of salted caramel brownies Hazel and I baked.)
I reorganized Fee’s closet and amassed a whole pile of things that she has outgrown (dang, that happened fast).
Thanks to her close-in-age big sis and some very enthusiastic (and generous) grandparents/aunts/uncles/friends, Felix was born into a well-stocked closet. Lucky girl!
In an attempt to pay it forward, I figure I have enough stuff to send out 3 solid care packages. This isn’t a contest or anything, just an opportunity to maybe lend a hand (in the form of baby clothes, sleep swaddles and diapers) to a few moms in need.
So here is the deal
If you are expecting or have a brand new baby girl (less than a month old, since many of the pieces are for newborns) or know someone who could use a little help ….shoot me an email with the baby’s age/due-date and your address and I will send the treats to 3 readers who respond.
I was invited by lululemon for “yoga. brunch .community. love.” Talk about 4 wonderful things!
I adore lululemon (obviously). As a brand, it is one of my top 5 favorites, So I was excited to spend some time getting to know folks from the lulu community.
We started with an hour long yoga class on the top floor of the W Lake Shore Drive. The windows looked out on a very foggy Lake Michigan. The view was ethereal - it was if I was high-planking in the clouds
At the end of our practice, we did some meditation and sent energy of happiness and love to our dearests, then to our acquaintances, then to the others in the room and then out into the universe for anyone who might need it.
Spreading Love with each breath? What a happy thing to envision!
After the class, we enjoyed champagne cocktails, fruit parfaits and a whole lot of talking. We were ostensibly a room full of strangers, but I don’t think you would have guessed it. Conversations flowed easily. We had a lot in common.
A sampling of topics discussed: Preschool Admissions, college football, great half marathons (this one, specifically), Life as a working mama, vinyasa scarves, and “Corporate Culture”
And speaking of which: Every person I met from lululemon seemed to the embody the manifesto printed on their shopping bags. They were a radiant group of ladies with what seemed like a genuine passion for/belief in their company….a feeling that was contagious…
I have long loved lululemon because their pants make my butt look fantastic, but after this event, I can say my feelings for the company run even deeper. I think they are a pretty inspiring bunch!
Now, bring on the warrior pose.
Thank you Nina for the invite. It was a really great morning!
