Diaper Bags [that don’t make me want to chop off my own arm]

A week before Hazel was born, I splurged on a Storksak diaper bag that ended up being worth every penny.  Those first few months, it held everything I needed to take long walks around the city, drive down to visit my grandma or just be away from home with the baby for a full day.

Mary Poppin’s purse had nothing over my Storksak!

But as Hazel transitioned from the bassinet stroller to the upright position, the bag became a little too bulky (and more than we needed) to tote around on our shorter outings….so on a whim, we decided to pick up a less expensive “on the go” tote.

We went with the SkipHop Messenger bag….
and I HATE it.  I HATE every last thing about this busted bag….and even though I still use it for Hazel, I literally curse it’s name, everytime I strap it across my shoulders (we call the bag “into the abyss” because once you put something in there - the odds of it being lost forever are very, very high)

It’s terrible.
Hard to access, my stuff flies out of the front flap pockets every single time I open it, zippers get stuck, inside pocket design is bizarre, and the outside material has snagged and pilled.

All in all, I just don’t think it is a well-designed piece.
(sorry if you have this bag and love it….it just doesn’t work for me)

With H2 on the way, I have been considering replacing our SkipHop….so I have been doing some online hunting.  And Since I have gotten several questions from mamas to be about diaper bag suggestions, I figured I would share some of my favorites with y’all.

Danzo

Hobo Baby Bag - Black
Retro Baby Duffle - Slate Gray

Aren’t these sharp?! Spotted these Danzo bags at Barneys and fell in love with their modern shape and incredible inside organization system!  Oprah is apparently also a fan, as these bags landed on her O List last year thanks to the “Clear pockets, detachable shoulder strap, nylon changing pad, and 25 Velcro labels that make this the ultimate mother’s little helper”

Marc by Marc Jacobs

Pretty Eliz-A-Baby Bag - Black, Tan, Blue

Before having a baby, I was one of those girls who said she would convert a cute purse into my diaper bag….well, turns out, that is a terrible idea because more than anything - you need your diaper bag to be super practical.  The insulated pockets, changing pad slot and in-bag-organizers all are new-mom life savers.

What I love about this Marc by Marc Jacobs bag is that it has all of the functional features mentioned above….without actually looking like a diaper bag.

Storksak

Nylon Sofia Diaper Bag  (Black Metallic, Gold Metallic)

Ok, this is the same shape as the Storksac I currently own, so I obviously won’t be repurchasing it…but I had to include the nylon versions in my “awesome diaper bag” list.

The magnetic closures on the pockets, outside/inside bottle storage slots and general attractiveness are just a few of the reasons I adore this bag.

Kate Spade

New York Bon Shopper Baby Bag (Black, Watercolor, Emerald)

I haven’t yet seen this bag in person, but it sure looks good on my screen and the specs sound promising.  I think I would prefer a bag that has an attachable shoulder strap, but if that is not important to you - you might want to add this to the consideration list.

Worth Noting:

I know these bags aren’t necessarily the most budget friendly (and to be honest, I am still not convinced I will pony up the cash to buy a replacement), but I wanted to share my dream bags with any mama’s looking to splurge a little…

If I can’t enjoy a new one, perhaps I will live vicariously through you :)

  4. talklikealady said: I have the Kate Spade bag. It is great to use for quick errands and doesn’t have the baby bag look. If you want something for both girls, it might be a little small. Good luck in your search!
