The greatest gifts don’t typically come in a box and wrapped in a bow. I know that.
But sometimes, they do.
And this story is about the most remarkable present (of the unwrappable variety) I have ever received
A couple of years ago I spotted “Bananas in Baccarat” by Ariana Caroli, hanging in a gallery in LA and I fell in love. Instantly. It wasn’t just that I thought the painting was pretty, but it actually seemed to radiate light and draw me in. The piece is huge (5 feet tall?) and filled me with joy much in the same way it filled the room with color.
When I left the gallery, i couldn’t get the work out of my mind and I called my mom right just to talk about it’s beauty and impact.
The painting has stuck with me for years….I think of it every time I pick up bananas from the market or have the pleasure of dining on fine baccarat crystal. I have shared the story of those Bananas with everyone in my life and even blogged about it last summer.
Fast Forward:
A few weeks ago, Mom and Dad A showed up at out apartment with a very big box. Truth be told, I panicked a little at first- I thought perhaps there was a jungle gym inside the box and I had absolutely NO idea where we were going to store it. It was not a jungle gym.
My parents were almost giddy as they presented the package- I had never seen them so excited about a gift. They insisted Simon and I step back while they opened up the box, pulled out the packing material and revealed…you guessed it:
Bananas In Baccarat
[!!!]
“Baby Girl’s first piece of Art” my mom said….”a collection for my granddaughter”
I went a little weak at the knees and for a moment thought I might faint…I sincerely didn’t know how to react to such a generous gift. Nothing I could do seemed like a remotely adequate expression of my gratitude, and so all I could do was say “thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Since receiving the gift, I have spent time every single day just admiring the painting and I already know exactly where it needs to hang: the nursery.
Just think, our Baby Girl will get to wake up to the Bananas every morning…
what an incredible way to start her day. her life.
Wow. & Thank you.
